E*thirteen e*spec Race wheelset

With the e*spec Race, E*thirteen introduces a robust carbon wheelset designed to withstand the higher stresses eMTB components are subjected to. The additional power of the electric motor, which is transferred through the drivetrain onto the freewheel, puts significantly more stress on the freewheel system and hub than non-motorised mountain bikes. The highlight of the e*spec Race wheelset: compared to conventional freewheel systems, the bearing is pushed further inwards. This simple but effective trick makes it possible to use larger, more robust bearings, which in turn allow for a more robust freewheel. For increased durability, the mechanism is triple sealed. In addition, the e*spec hub has a 6° engagement angle and uses a strong steel axle with pinch bolt. According to E*thirteen, this increases the dynamic load rating by 53%, making their new eMTB-specific wheelset 37% stiffer than most common freewheels with smaller bearings. This new approach convinced our jury with its sophisticated mechanism and price point, which is more than fair considering it’s a high-quality carbon wheelset. On the trail, the wheelset feels direct and provides good traction as well as a good level of comfort, convincing our test-crew.
