At first glance there’s little that visually differentiates the Trek Fuel EX 9.9 29 from its previous iteration, but its development has been substantial. Trek have completely reworked the rear shock, introducing Thru Shaft technology to this whip. Unlike conventional shocks that have a sealed chamber which needs to be balanced when compressed, Trek have designed their shock to be open at both ends, allowing the shaft to move right through the shock for a faster response. The consequences are major boosts to the bike’s traction and ride responsiveness. Trek worked with their long-term partner and F1 suspension experts Penske Racing to render this approach fit for bikes. As such, the arguably already brilliant Trek Fuel EX 9.9 29 is now even better with this upgrade. Well versed in creating a fun ride, the lightweight 29er darts up climbs, stays glued to the ground when you want it to, mixes in great stability when you’re tearing down a descent, and never falls short with its reserves.
